How does it work?
Drop files into Folderless. A local AI model reads each one, extracts who it's about, what type it is, when it was issued — searchable in seconds. No manual tagging. No folders. Find by meaning, not by filename.
How do I get access?
Click “Get started” on the homepage. Enter your access code — from a Folderless link, or complete the quick anonymous survey to get one — then download, install, and sign in with Google. You’re in.

Why local-first instead of the cloud?
Sensitive files — tax returns, passports, medical records — should live where YOU control them. Not on someone else's server. Not training someone else's AI. Not feeding the attention economy. Folderless keeps everything on your machine. Privacy by physics — not by policy. That's the whole promise.
Where does my data live?
Your files stay where you keep them — local drives or cloud storages of your choice. Folderless runs on your device and processes everything locally with on-device AI: no cloud LLMs, no server-side index of your files, no telemetry on file contents. macOS for now (Apple Silicon M1/M2/M3 recommended, but not required — Intel Mac users are welcome to try). AI features are optional — enable them whenever you like; any consumer Mac is enough to get started.

Why "file vault" instead of "document management"?
"Document management" sounds enterprise-y — SharePoint, cabinets, IT policies. "File vault" says what Folderless actually is: a private, on-device space where every file across your storages is organized, findable, and duplicate-free. It's yours. On YOUR device. Not another cloud silo.

What’s the origin story?
Visa renewal time. Dozens of documents — every family member, every year — and I lost hours hunting through drives, clouds, folders, subfolders. Like finding a needle in a haystack, except the haystack was a cluster of folders piled over decades. That's when it landed: the folder maze is a decades-old design built for machines, not for how a human brain recollects. So I started building one that works the way you actually remember things — by who, what, where, when.
